Communications of the Section on Sociological Practice

These publications are best with member participation....share your ideas and endeavors with your colleagues! Consider writing an article for our newsletter. Show up at the business meeting at the ASA meeting. Use the listserv to stay informed about section activities, and to discuss any issues that perhaps only another practicing sociologist might understand. Just because traffic isn't constant doesn't mean a listserv has little value.

Section Newsletters

Seeking Newsletter Submissions!
We invite you to send articles and announcements for the Summer 2008 issue of the Newsletter of the Section on Sociological Practice of the ASA. We welcome all items that are appropriate, including short thought pieces, human interest stories, items that help us get a picture of new developments in the field, as well as our more traditional conference announcements, calls for papers, and announcements of changes in members' jobs and members' publications or other announcements. Thought pieces should be unpublished items of 400 - 1000 words. Students are also encouraged to submit articles.

Please send them to Editor, Leora Lawton, lawton at techsociety dot com.
Stay tuned for official call for submissions notices to the section's announce list.

Please forward this to colleagues who might wish to submit materials.

As always, section members are encourage to write to articles (up to 100 words) or submit other news, such as book publications, grants received, position changes, etc.

Minutes of Business and Council Meetings

Each year at the ASA the Sociological Practice section holds a combined business and council meeting. It's opportunity for all members, including student members, to voice whatever they want to about how this section could better serve the members, all sociologists, and even society.

Listserv Information

There are two listservs provided by the ASA for each section. The first is an Announce list, where only two list managers are approved, and only list managers can post. With our section, the Chair and the Chair-Elect are the authorized list managers.

Section Discussion List
The discussion list, unlike the section announcement list used by section officers, is not an opt-out list (prepopulated), rather each member needs to opt-in, or join.

Subscribing to the list:

  • In the address field, type in: majordomo@listserv.asanet.org
    Leave the subject field blank.
  • In the text area or body of the message, type in subscribe soc_practice. Do not type anything else. If your mail software automatically inserts a signature, then type two hyphens -- on the next line after the subscribe command to have the listserver ignore other text.
  • Send the subscription message.
  • You will receive an email message confirmation from majordomo@listserv.asanet.org, informing you that the request was received. You will be given an authorization key and instructions to respond back to majordomo. This step is to prevent someone from subscribing another user without the latter's knowledge. Once the confrmation is sent back to majordomo, you will receive two messages from majordomo welcoming you to the subscribed list. Save them...they tell you how to unsubscribe.
Unsubscribing

But just in case you lose those instructions, section members can unsubscribe their list participation at any time by sending a message to majordomo@listserv.asanet.org and type the following command in the body of the text: unsubscribe soc_practice.

Useful Hints
Write to infoservice@asanet.org to update an email address or be removed from the list.
You can get a list of available majordomo commands by sending an email to majordomo@listserv.asanet.org. For your convenience, we have reproduced the here as a simple .txt file.
Guidelines to Discussion List Behavior
The ASA advises section discussion lists to have established guidelines of behavior. The following guidelines are common sense and courtesy. You all know them, I'm sure.
  • Always treat other listserv members - your colleagues - with respect. Never use ad hominems, offensive language, or do any other of those mean ways of speaking that civilized society finds so unpleasantly unacceptable.
  • Keep your posts short, link your sources rather than dump in all the text (better also in terms of copyrights).
  • It's been found that it's best to keep discussion of political viewpoints off limits. Stick with the topics that are of sociological or professional interest to colleagues.
  • If you want to discuss sensitive issues or engage in reprimands, keep it off the discussion list.
  • Do not post others' comments elsewhere without permission.
